1 Samuel 17

For God alone my soul waits in silence;
 from him comes my salvation.
 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
 my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

God’s Word

Because of God, our greatest enemy, our own sin, has been defeated. Jesus, as he breathed his last, said “It is finished” (John 19:30). The power of sin is forever defeated and though we may struggle, our hope is forever in Christ.

David knew that God’s love and favor are on his people, and his confidence was in God. When others were fearful, it wasn’t David’s might or size that gave him confidence, but God! In Christ, we are also God’s people. Like the Israelites in 1 Samuel 17, we have the opportunity each day to stand up for the honor of God. It is important to remember that we do not put our hope and strength in the gifts or things God has given us.

Consider: Are there ways that you can be tempted to trust in the things that God has given you rather than trusting in God himself?

Psalm 62:1-2
 For God alone my soul waits in silence;
 from him comes my salvation.
 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
 my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

How can we today stand up for the honor and the glory of God in the face of the culture we find ourselves in?

God’s Mission

As we stick up for the Glory of God in our world today, we have the privilege of inviting others to glorify God by telling them the good news of Jesus.

Because of the gospel, our sin and shame have been removed. The Bible tells us that as believers God uses everything we go through for our good and His glory.

Have you ever heard someone share their testimony? Did it surprise you to hear them admit their weaknesses and mistakes? As Christians, we know that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). When we are weak, He is strong.

When was the last time you shared your testimony? In your group, practice sharing in 3-5 minutes your testimony. As you share, consider the following questions:

  • Before believing, what prompted you to pursue Christianity?

  • What is it you believe (share what Jesus did)?

  • How is your life different after becoming a Christian?

  • In what ways do you struggle? How can you rely on other Christians and the church to support and care for you? How can you also care for them?

--

Take a moment as a group to share with one another about someone that you want to win to Christ. How is it going? Have you had any successes or failures? Pray as a group, or with one other person for boldness and favor as we share the gospel with others. Other prayers: How can you pray for each other? Pray together about God’s Mission and other requests and thanksgivings.
